A new operator needs more than a sign-in. They need to know your sites, your rules, and what to do when something goes wrong. This one-page plan helps supervisors train a new operator in a few days, then check that they are ready.
Before you start
- Pick a trainer: an experienced operator or a supervisor.
- Print the daily checklist, the access policy and the incident form.
- Make sure the new operator has their sign-in, given the way your organisation agreed.
- Plan the training away from your busiest hours.
Reuse what Skyline gave you
At handover, Skyline walked your team through live view, playback, and adding cameras or sites. Use your notes from that session as the base for this plan. If your team needs more help, contact Skyline support.
The plan at a glance
| When | Focus | By the end, the new operator can |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Rules and the live wall | Explain why we use CCTV, follow the room and sign-in rules, and name every site and priority camera |
| Day 2 | Playback and routine | Find three known moments on the timeline and complete the daily checklist |
| Day 3 | Drills | Handle a practice incident and a practice camera-offline case |
| Weeks 1 and 2 | Shadowing | Work full shifts next to an experienced operator |
| End of week 2 | Sign-off | Pass every check on the sign-off sheet |
Day 1: rules and the live wall
- Why we use CCTV. Explain your purpose, the privacy rules and the access policy.
- Console-room rules. Who may enter, no phones filming screens, and lock the screen when leaving.
- Sign-in rules. Never share a sign-in. Never write a password down.
- Tour of the live wall. Show each site, how cameras are named, and which cameras are priority cameras.
- Who to call. The supervisor, the IT admin, each site contact, and Skyline support.
Day 2: playback and the daily routine
- The trainer picks three known moments from the recordings, such as a delivery or a door opening.
- The new operator finds each one on the timeline. They write down the camera and the exact time.
- The new operator completes the daily checklist while the trainer watches.
- They practise writing clear shift log entries: what, where, when, and who was told.
Day 3: drills
A drill is a practice run. Use made-up cases, not real incidents.
- Incident drill. The trainer says a laptop went missing from the second floor between 1 pm and 4 pm. The new operator finds the footage, notes the details, tells the supervisor, and starts a chain-of-custody form.
- Camera-offline drill. The trainer names one camera as offline. The new operator follows the offline routine: note the details, check how many cameras are affected, report to the right person, and record the gap.
After each drill, talk through what went well and what to do differently.
Weeks 1 and 2: shadowing
Shadowing means working next to an experienced operator. The new operator takes over a few more tasks each day. The experienced operator steps in only when needed. By the end of week 2, the new operator should run a full shift with little help.
The sign-off sheet
The trainer initials each line only when the new operator does it alone and correctly.
| Check | Trainer initials | Date |
|---|---|---|
| Explains our CCTV purpose and the access policy | ||
| Knows every site and every priority camera | ||
| Finds recorded video on the timeline without help | ||
| Completes the daily checklist correctly | ||
| Handles the incident drill correctly | ||
| Handles the camera-offline drill correctly | ||
| Writes clear shift log entries |
Keep the signed sheet in the operator's training file.
Keep skills fresh
- Run a short refresher drill every few months.
- Repeat the relevant training after big changes, such as a new site or many new cameras.
- Ask operators what still confuses them, and update your notes.
