Proxmox VE Virtualization Installation & Support in Saudi Arabia
SKYLINE installs, configures, supports and troubleshoots Proxmox VE across Saudi Arabia: clustering, ZFS, Ceph, backup and VMware migration in KSA.
Overview
Proxmox VE virtualization done right in Saudi Arabia
Proxmox Virtual Environment (Proxmox VE) is a complete, open-source server virtualization platform built on Debian 12 ("Bookworm"), combining the KVM/QEMU hypervisor for full virtual machines and LXC for lightweight Linux containers under a single, web-based management interface. SKYLINE installs, configures, supports and troubleshoots Proxmox VE for organizations across Saudi Arabia — from a single consolidation host to multi-node high-availability clusters in Riyadh, Jeddah and Dammam.
Because Proxmox VE is genuinely open source (licensed under the GNU AGPLv3), there is no per-CPU or per-core license cost to run it. You only pay for an optional enterprise support subscription if you want the stable enterprise repository and Proxmox-vendor support. For many Saudi businesses re-evaluating their virtualization spend after recent VMware licensing changes, this makes Proxmox VE a serious, production-ready alternative — and SKYLINE provides the local engineering, deployment and ongoing support layer that turns it into a dependable platform.
We do not claim to be an authorized Proxmox partner or hold any specific vendor tier. What we do is straightforward and verifiable: we design the architecture, install and harden the hosts, build the cluster and storage, migrate your existing workloads, and stand behind the platform with hands-on support and an optional annual maintenance contract (AMC).
Installation, host hardening and initial configuration
Every engagement starts with a clean, deliberate installation rather than a default click-through. SKYLINE installs Proxmox VE 8.x from the official ISO, plans the boot and storage layout (including ZFS-on-root mirrors for resilient boot disks), and configures the network bridges (vmbr0 and VLAN-aware bridges) to match your existing switching. We separate management, corosync cluster, storage and VM traffic onto dedicated NICs or VLANs so the platform behaves predictably under load.
Post-install hardening covers the essentials: replacing the self-signed certificate with a trusted one, configuring the firewall at the datacenter, node and VM levels, setting up two-factor authentication and role-based access for administrators, and pointing the host at the no-subscription or enterprise repository as appropriate. We document the build so your team — or ours under AMC — can operate it confidently. For licensing of the optional enterprise support subscription, see software licensing.
Clustering and high availability with pvecm
A single Proxmox host is useful; a cluster is transformational. SKYLINE builds multi-node Proxmox VE clusters using the pvecm tooling and corosync, so virtual machines and containers can live-migrate between hosts with no downtime, and the High Availability (HA) manager can automatically restart workloads if a node fails. We configure redundant corosync links (link0/link1) on separate physical networks so cluster communication does not compete with VM or storage traffic.
For the common two-node scenario, a cluster cannot reach a safe quorum on its own. We deploy a corosync QDevice (an external tie-breaker vote) so the cluster stays quorate and HA continues to work even when one of the two nodes is down. We size and document the quorum, fencing and HA group policies so that failover is deterministic, not a surprise. The full command walkthrough is in our knowledge base article on configuring a Proxmox VE cluster via the CLI.
ZFS and Ceph storage architecture
Storage is where most virtualization projects succeed or fail, and Proxmox VE gives you two excellent open-source options that SKYLINE deploys regularly. ZFS is ideal for single hosts and small clusters: it provides software RAID (mirror, RAIDZ1/2/3), end-to-end checksums against silent data corruption, inline compression, snapshots and efficient replicated backups between nodes via pvesr (storage replication). We size the ARC cache, plan the vdev layout and enable compression appropriately for your workload.
For larger clusters that need shared, self-healing storage, SKYLINE deploys Ceph as a hyper-converged layer directly on the Proxmox nodes using pveceph. Ceph spreads data across OSDs on every node, tolerates disk and host failures, and grows by simply adding disks — giving you a scale-out storage platform without a separate SAN. We plan the dedicated Ceph network, replica/min-size policy, monitor and manager placement, and OSD layout so the cluster is both fast and safe.
Backup, disaster recovery and Proxmox Backup Server
A virtualization platform is only as trustworthy as its backups. SKYLINE configures Proxmox VE's built-in vzdump backup jobs (full, scheduled, with retention and notifications) and deploys Proxmox Backup Server (PBS) for incremental, deduplicated, compressed and encrypted backups. PBS dramatically reduces backup windows and storage consumption versus full image dumps, supports verification jobs to prove backups are restorable, and enables live-restore so a VM can boot from backup almost immediately.
We design a real disaster-recovery posture: on-site PBS for fast restores, an off-site or second-datacenter PBS target for the 3-2-1 rule, and tested restore runbooks. For teams that also run Veeam today, see how it complements our broader services and our marketplace of supported platforms.
VMware to Proxmox VE migration
Migrating off VMware ESXi/vSphere no longer means weeks of manual disk conversion. Proxmox VE 8.2 and later include an integrated ESXi Import Wizard that connects to an ESXi host as an import-source storage, lists its VMs, and imports them — mapping disks, network and most configuration into the Proxmox model. It even supports a live-import so the cutover downtime is minimal: stop the VM on ESXi, start it on Proxmox, and disk data is fetched on demand while it runs.
SKYLINE plans and executes these migrations end to end: inventory and dependency mapping, network and VLAN parity, VirtIO driver preparation for Windows guests for best performance, phased cutover of pilot workloads first, and rollback safety. We have verified the import path works against the ESXi versions Proxmox officially tested (6.5 through 8.0). If you are weighing the move, our blog comparing Proxmox VE vs VMware vs Hyper-V for Saudi organizations lays out the trade-offs.
Ongoing support, AMC and troubleshooting across KSA
After go-live, SKYLINE keeps the platform healthy. Our annual maintenance contract (AMC) options cover proactive patching of the Proxmox VE and kernel packages, cluster and Ceph health monitoring, backup verification, capacity reviews, and a clear escalation path for incidents. We troubleshoot the things that actually go wrong in production: corosync quorum and split-brain issues, Ceph OSDs that go down or out, ZFS pool degradation, failed live-migrations, HA fencing loops, and storage performance bottlenecks.
We support customers in Riyadh, Jeddah, Dammam and across the Kingdom, remotely and on-site. To scope an installation, a VMware migration, or an AMC, contact SKYLINE or call +966 50 993 9334.
Proxmox VE Virtualization Installation & Support in Saudi Arabia — Frequently Asked Questions
Is Proxmox VE really free, and what does SKYLINE charge for?
Proxmox VE is open-source software under the GNU AGPLv3 with no per-CPU or per-core license fee. An optional paid subscription from Proxmox unlocks the stable enterprise repository and vendor support. SKYLINE charges for engineering services — design, installation, clustering, storage, migration and ongoing support/AMC — not for the software itself. The optional enterprise subscription can be procured via our software licensing desk.
Can SKYLINE migrate our existing VMware virtual machines to Proxmox?
Yes. Proxmox VE 8.2+ ships with an integrated ESXi Import Wizard that connects directly to an ESXi host and imports VMs with their disks, networks and most configuration mapped automatically, including a live-import mode to minimize downtime. SKYLINE plans inventory, network parity, Windows VirtIO drivers, phased cutover and rollback so the migration is low-risk.
Do we need three servers for high availability?
Three nodes is the recommended minimum for reliable quorum and clean HA failover. A two-node cluster is possible if you add a corosync QDevice as an external tie-breaker vote so the cluster stays quorate when one node is down. SKYLINE sizes the right topology for your budget and uptime needs.
Should we use ZFS or Ceph for storage?
ZFS is excellent for single hosts and small clusters, giving software RAID, checksums, snapshots and node-to-node replication. Ceph is the right choice for larger clusters that need shared, scale-out, self-healing storage without a separate SAN. SKYLINE assesses your node count, performance targets and growth plans before recommending one or both.
