Before you open a hardware case, renew support or sign an annual maintenance contract, you need two facts for every server: its identity (Dell Service Tag or HPE serial number) and its current warranty or support status. Both vendors publish official lookup tools. This guide shows where to find the identifiers, physically and remotely, how to run the official checks, and what to record so your support records stay accurate.
Before you start
- Have network access to the iDRAC or iLO of each server, or physical access to the front of the rack.
- For HPE warranty check you need to sign in to the HPE Support Center with an HPE account.
- Only use the vendors' own sites below. Third-party "warranty checker" sites are not official sources.
Step 1 — Find the Dell Service Tag
The Service Tag is Dell's unique system identifier. Dell's Service Tag article and server manuals give several ways to read it:
- Label: most PowerEdge servers have a pull-out information tag on the front panel; some models place it on the back. The R760 manual calls it the Express Service Tag and says it shows the Service Tag, Express Service Code, manufacture date, NIC and MAC details, and the iDRAC secure default password if that option was ordered.
- iDRAC web interface: log in and go to System > Overview; the Service Tag is in the system information section.
- RACADM: the iDRAC9 RACADM guide documents a command that displays the host system's Service Tag:
racadm getsvctag - From the operating system, as listed in Dell's article:
# Linux sudo dmidecode -s system-serial-number # VMware ESXi esxcli hardware platform getwmic bios get serialnumber
Step 2 — Check Dell warranty status
- Open Dell's article How to find warranty status and information for your Dell product and follow its link to the Check Warranty Status page.
- Enter the Service Tag, or let Dell's automated tool detect it, to see the warranty status and expiration date.
- Note the renewal and transfer points in the same article: warranty renewals are not available in all countries, products bought through a reseller may need the reseller for renewal, and ownership transfer is handled for used products, products moving country and acquired companies.
Step 3 — Track Dell warranties for a fleet with OpenManage Enterprise
If you run OpenManage Enterprise (OME), you do not need to check servers one by one:
- Monitor > Warranty lists each device's warranty status. Selecting a device shows the service level code, service provider, and warranty start and end dates.
- OME collects warranty status automatically once a week; Refresh Warranty runs the job on demand. The guide notes warranty data is retrieved over IPv4 only.
- Application Settings > Warranty sets how many days ahead to warn about expiring warranties (default 90 days).
- Monitor > Reports > Warranties Expiring in Next 30 days is a ready-made report, and OME raises an internal critical alert (CWAR0001) when warranties have expired.
Setup steps are in getting started with OpenManage Enterprise.
Step 4 — Find the HPE serial number and product ID
- Label: the DL380 Gen11 user guide shows a Serial number/iLO information pull tab on the front panel.
- iLO web interface: click Information in the navigation tree to open the iLO Overview page. Its Server details list the Server Serial Number and Product ID; HPE explains that the product ID distinguishes between systems with similar serial numbers.
- Watch for Serial Number (Logical): iLO shows it only when software such as a server profile sets it, and it can differ from the manufactured serial. Use the Server Serial Number for warranty checks.
Step 5 — Check HPE warranty in the HPE Support Center
- Sign in to the HPE Support Center.
- Open Warranty Check from the workspace card or from the left menu under Resources > Warranty Check.
- Enter the serial number and click Submit. If several products share the serial number, choose the right one from the pop-up list.
- Read the result: service type, service details, effective dates and status. HPE defines Active (end date more than 90 days away), Expiring Soon (less than 90 days), Expired, and Active in Future.
Note: HPE says that if the product was registered, the warranty end date is based on the purchase date; otherwise it is estimated from the manufacture date. If a product shows as not entitled and you believe it should be, contact HPE support with your purchase records.
What to record for support and AMC
| Field | Dell PowerEdge | HPE ProLiant |
|---|---|---|
| Identifier | Service Tag (and Express Service Code) | Server Serial Number and Product ID |
| Coverage | Warranty status, end date, service level (from Dell Support or OME) | Service type, status and effective dates (from Warranty Check) |
| Management | iDRAC IP and licence tier | iLO IP and licence tier |
| Location | Site, rack and U position | Site, rack and U position |
Review the list at least every quarter so nothing drops out of coverage unnoticed. For contract options, see Dell server AMC and HPE server AMC.
Checklist
- Service Tag or serial number confirmed from the label and from iDRAC or iLO.
