SCADA and OT integration project

Design, build and commissioning of a SCADA system that brings PLCs, RTUs and field instruments onto one supervisory platform, with clear alarms, historian data and secure remote access.

Typical scope
SCADA and OT integration
  1. Survey and I/O list
  2. Functional design specification
  3. Build and configuration
  4. Factory acceptance test
  5. Installation, SAT and cutover
Typical scope, not a case study

This page describes a typical project of this kind. It is not a record of a specific client project, and the final scope is always set after a site survey.

When clients usually call us

  • Plants running several unconnected control systems or vendor HMIs
  • Sites replacing an end-of-life SCADA or HMI platform
  • Operators who need remote monitoring of pumping stations, tanks or substations
  • Facilities that must separate OT networks from IT ahead of a cybersecurity review

What is typically included

The usual scope. Items are added or removed after the survey, and each one is listed in the proposal.

  1. Site and system surveyInventory of PLCs, RTUs, protocols, I/O and network paths, and a review of the existing drawings.
  2. Architecture and network designControl network layout, redundancy, time synchronisation and an IT/OT zone and conduit model.
  3. SCADA configurationTag database, HMI screens, alarm philosophy, trends and reports on the agreed platform.
  4. PLC and RTU integrationDrivers and gateways for the protocols found on site, such as Modbus, DNP3, IEC 60870-5-104, OPC UA, PROFINET or EtherNet/IP.
  5. Historian and reportingProcess data storage, shift and production reports, and export to business systems.
  6. Secure remote accessA controlled access path for engineers and vendors, with role-based accounts and logging.
  7. Panels and installationControl panels, network cabinets and cabling when the scope includes hardware.
  8. TrainingOperator and maintenance training on the delivered system.

How this project runs

  1. Stage 1 Survey and I/O list

Walk-down of the site, I/O and signal list, and a record of every device and protocol.

  2. Stage 2 Functional design specification

How the system will behave, screen by screen and alarm by alarm, signed off by your team.

  3. Stage 3 Build and configuration

Software configuration, panel build and a staging environment that mirrors the site.

  4. Stage 4 Factory acceptance test

The configured system is tested against the specification, with your engineers witnessing.

  5. Stage 5 Installation, SAT and cutover

Site installation, site acceptance test and a cutover planned around your operating windows.

Deliverables at handover

  • Functional design specification
  • Network and architecture drawings
  • I/O list and tag database
  • Signed FAT and SAT reports
  • As-built drawings and configuration backups
  • Operator and maintenance manuals

Standards we design to

  • ISA-101HMI design
  • ISA-18.2 / IEC 62682Alarm management
  • IEC 62443Industrial cybersecurity
  • ISA-95Enterprise and control system integration
  • NCA OTCCSaudi operational technology cybersecurity controls

Listing a standard here means we design and work to it. It does not mean Skyline holds a certificate for that standard.

What we will ask you before we quote

  • Existing drawings, I/O lists and PLC programs, if you have them
  • The list of sites and how they are connected today
  • Your preferred SCADA platform, or whether you want a recommendation
  • Who signs off the design and witnesses the tests

Questions about this scope

Which SCADA platform will you use?

The platform is chosen with you during design, based on what is already installed, licensing and who will maintain it. Where the existing platform can be kept and extended, the scope can be built around it.

Can the plant keep running during the cutover?

The cutover is planned in the design stage. Where possible the new system runs alongside the old one, and the switch is made in a window you approve.

Does the project cover OT cybersecurity?

Network segmentation and secure remote access are part of the design. A separate OT security assessment against IEC 62443 or the NCA OTCC can be added to the scope.

Other projects we deliver

All typical scopes

  • Data centre aisle between rows of server racks

    Data centre

Data centre and server room build

Design and build of a data centre or server room: power, cooling, containment, fire detection and suppression, cabling and monitoring, laid out so any component can be maintained without shutting the room down.

See the typical scope: Data centre and server room build
  • Clean-agent fire suppression cylinders in a server room

    Fire safety

    Fire detection and suppression

Design, installation and commissioning of fire detection and suppression for plants, warehouses, electrical rooms and server rooms, including the drawings and documents your Civil Defense submission needs.
